The carnivore diet

What is the carnivore diet?

As the name of the diet says it, it’s very simple what it means: meat, fish and other animal products. People on the carnivore diet tend to mostly eat steak, burgers, fish and other meat cuts but also products like tallow, cheese and eggs. Brazilian steakhouses tend to fear customers with this diet as they usually take full advantage of the unlimited meat service.

The carnivore diet often leads to a state of ketosis in the body, which makes it a form of the ketogenic diet and is also very similar to the paleo diet minus the nuts and other whole foods. [1]

The carnivore diet has many health benefits including weight loss, better focus, lowering risk to diabetes and much more. It’s a very effective and simple way of clean eating and still getting all your essential nutrients. Often people on the carnivore diet have long periods of fasting which makes it a very time efficient diet. It’s recommended to eat the best quality of meats and fish like grass-fed beef and wild caught fish.[2]  Companies like Papa Earth, Farm Club Meats and TruLocal would be excellent places to source your meat from in Canada when you’re on the carnivore diet. [3]

The carnivore diet (sometimes called a “zero-carb diet”) is an eating approach in which the only permitted foods are animal products — primarily meat, fish, eggs, and limited dairy. All plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds) are eliminated entirely.

Unlike more liberal low-carb approaches (like keto or paleo), the carnivore diet aims to reduce carbohydrate intake essentially to zero, so that the body must rely on fat (and protein) for energy. Proponents argue that by cutting out all plant matter and carbohydrate exposure, metabolic and inflammatory “stressors” are reduced, and claim benefits such as weight loss, clearer metabolism, improved mental clarity, or relief of autoimmune symptoms.

Potential downsides of the carnivore diet

However, the diet is highly controversial. Critics point out several potential downsides:

  • It is extremely low in dietary fiber, which may lead to constipation, changes in gut microbiome, or digestive discomfort.
  • It excludes many sources of essential micronutrients (vitamin C, folate, magnesium, etc.) and beneficial plant compounds (antioxidants, phytonutrients).
  • High intake of red meat and saturated fat may raise LDL cholesterol, potentially increasing risk of cardiovascular disease in the long run.
  • The evidence supporting disease-improvement claims is weak; much of it is anecdotal, self-reported, or short-term.

In short: the carnivore diet is an extreme, highly restricted version of low-carb eating focused exclusively on animal-based foods. It may offer short-term gains (especially weight loss) for some, but long-term safety and broad health effects remain uncertain and debated in the nutrition community.
